Vitamin D Prevents Hip Fractures in Older Women!

Heike A. Bischoff-Ferrari, DrPH et al, have just published an important study on Vitamin D and fractures in older women, in the prestigious Archives of Internal Medicine,

These doctors reviewed 12 different medical studies that included more than 65,000 subjects, all over the age of 65. The findings are that doses of Vitamin D OVER 400 IU per day reduce hip fractures in women living in the community by 29% and women in institutions (eg nursing homes) by 15%. Of note is that these results, with higher than 400IU of Vitamin D were independent of adding more calcium. No benefit for fracture prevention was found in the commonly used dose of 400 IU per day that is in most over the counter Calcium supplements.

The "higher doses" in this study were only 482 to 770 IU per day of additional vitamin D. The authors go on to recommend that further studies with even higher doses of vitamin D (as I recommend in my book) should be done to see if the higher levels of vitamin D will further decrease the fracture rates. This type of study still has not been started.

Welcome To The Vitamin D Revolution Blog

Welcome to my blog which I will update on a regular basis to give you the latest and most important information coming out in the medical literature and in the world about vitamin D.

When I finished writing my book, I knew that it was just the beginning. The Internet can keep us up to date on the latest findings on a daily basis, whereas a book once published is fixed until a new edition comes out.

I encourage you to sign up for the RSS feeds that will be connected with this blog. The book just recently went to press and already new information has come out in the medical literature. I will be updating this information to keep you informed on how this most powerful vitamin-hormone can keep you your family, friends and loved ones in a better state of health.

Give me your feedback and we will be in dialog.

American Public Health Association – Part 1

At the time of writing The Vitamin D Revolution, I was aware that the American Public Health Association (APHA) was formulating a policy statement about the importance of vitamin D for all people in our country. When the book went to press they had not finalized their statement and so I could not include it in the book.

I am delighted to tell you that the American Public Health Association has now put their policy statement regarding vitamin D on their website. (See link below)

I have carefully reviewed this groundbreaking document and would like to review it for you in a series of blog posts of which this is the first.

Vitamin D deficiency and heart disease

I was delighted to see a new article that came out in December 2008 in a major cardiology journal on the subject of vitamin D deficiency as a treatable cardiovascular risk factor. It was authored by Dr. Michael Holick and others.

In this article the authors review the role of vitamin D deficiency is a contributor to the development of heart disease. They review the medical literature and point out that vitamin D blood levels are inversely connected with coronary artery calcification. It is pointed out that vitamin D deficiency increases inflammation in the body, specifically diagnosable by elevated levels of C-reactive protein. The C-reactive protein was even recently mentioned in the Wall Street Journal as a risk factor that all executive should pay attention to with their physician. All patients with elevated C-reactive printing should have their vitamin D status evaluated.
