New Findings on the Relationship of Vitamin D Deficiency and Inflammatory Bowel Disease

New information presented several months ago at the 73rd Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology, found that patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)  (Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD)) are at a higher risk of developing vitamin D deficiencies.

Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin studied disease activity and quality of life, as well as IBD-related hospitalizations, surgeries and medication use.

This was a retrospective study looking at 504 inflammatory bowel disease patients.  Dr. Alex Ulitsky, the principal researcher , found that almost 50% of the patients were vitamin D deficient at some point and 11% were severely deficient.  In both Crohn’s disease and also ulcertaive colitis patients, vitamin D deficiency was independently associated with having higher disease activity scores compared with those patients that had normal levels of vitamin D.  Vitamin D deficient CD patients, but not UC patients had a worse quality of life when compared to patients who were not vitamin D deficient

A quote from Dr. Ulitsky was "All IBD patients, irrespective of their disease, disease location or nature should have their Vitamin D levels checked regularly and corrected aggressively when insufficiency is found."

I am delighted to see him saying this as we know that normalizing every patient’s vitamin D levels can at worse to do no harm, but at best may significantly improve their underlying disease process, and in this case their IBD
