In recent paper, by Diane Kamen et.al, was published looking at the connection of vitamin D and systemic lupus erythematosus. It contained a very nice review of the relationship between vitamin D and the immune system, and in this article particularly autoimmune disease. It was noted that vitamin D definitely benefits collegen — induced arthritis in mice. It also reviews international studies and american studies in humans. The authors specifically state that one study in Europe has found a significant correlation between vitamin D levels and lupus disease activity.
The conclusion of the authors is that "The physiologic and clinical significance of vitamin D deficiency in SLE is not entirely known". They recommend, that more prospective studies be done to vitamin D and lupus. The authors expect that correcting vitamin D deficiency will lead to better outcomes for lupus patients.
As I pointed out several times in my book there is absolutely nothing wrong with normalizing everybody’s vitamin D level and seeing what the clinical results are from doing that! I have been delighted with the results of normalizing vitamin D in so many medical conditions in my practice, including systemic lupus erythematosus.

Dear Dr. Soram,
What would you call normalizing the vitamin D level? (in respect of blood values)
Thanks very much
Helga

I have always taken calicum with V D, but in the past two month, I had a blood test and my Vit D level is low, was glad to find information on this as I did not understand what is the conection with my lupus and Vitamin D. Am so glad to find this
Thank you Elizabeth! I am glad you are correcting your D level ! Let me know if you see improvement over a few months

“Normal” is now accepted as over 30 ng/ml but integrative doctors including myself as I talk about in the book recommend 40-70 ng/ml . Hope that helps
Yep – I would agree with that.. Thanks for the line.
I have fibromyalgia and have been diagnosed now for two years. I also have pernecious anemia, along with post partial thyroidectomy,. I have had some new symptoms such as leg weakness tremors when bear weight . Called my Dr tell her the new symptoms and she stated my vitamin d level was 8., and she stated she mailed me a prescription for that, and to not worry? But with the severe pain and new symptoms I am concerned. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Jenn

some of your pain may be due to the very low vitamin D level. I would listen to your doctor and take the vitamin D pills she sent you and see how you feel in 8-10 weeks.
