Another Study Shows that Low Vitamin D Levels Raise the Risk for Death in the Elderly from Heart Disease and All Other Causes

I am delighted to see so many studies coming out on vitamin D and its role in human health. Over and over again they corroborate what I wrote about in my book that we all need higher levels of vitamin D to keep ourselves healthy, especially in this day of the health-care crisis our country is experiencing.

Another new PROSPECTIVE study showing the relationship between low vitamin D levels and higher likelihood of death from cardiovascular disease and all other causes of death has just been published in the prestigious Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

The American Academy of Dermatology Releases A Position Statement on Vitamin D-Finally!

I am delighted to see that the American Academy of Dermatology has released a new position paper on vitamin D. In my opinion,  releasing this paper is an acknowledgment that their recommendation for all of us to avoid sun completely for these last decades has contributed to the current vitamin D deficiency epidemic.

They are still only recommending RDA level-recommendations of replacement. However, I am delighted that they have come out with this statement.

70% of American Children (over 50 million kids) have Insufficient levels of Vitamin D !

A new study has just been recently published in the prestigious journal Pediatrics. The study looked at the prevalence and associations of vitamin D deficiency in United States children from 2001 to 2004.

Like so much epidemiological research in the United States, this study was based on the NHANES studies, that I have mentioned many times.

The purpose of this study was to determine how prevalent vitamin D deficiency as well as associations between vitamin D deficiency and heart disease risk factors were in children and adolescents, in our country.

In this case they evaluated over 6000 children and adolescents. The authors defined deficiency of vitamin D as being less than 15 ng/ml.. They defined insufficiency of vitamin D to be 15 to 29 ng/ml. They also measured traditional cardiovascular risk factors in the blood.

Low Vitamin D Brings Increased Risk for Heart Disease in Diabetics

A new article in Circulation magazine looks at low vitamin D levels and the risk for heart disease in diabetic patients.

Dr.Carlos Bernal Mizrachi, an endocrinologist at Washington University in St. Louis was the principal investigator.

He is quoted as saying "Vitamin D inhibits the uptake of cholesterol by cells called macrophages. The macrophages get clogged with cholesterol and become what scientists call foam cells, which are one of the earliest markers of atherosclerosis"

Vitamin D in women with Breast Cancer and after treatment.

Many postmenopausal women who have had treatment for breast cancer take a category of drug called Aromatase Inhibitors after their primary treatment for the cancer is completed. The purpose of this drug is to block any estrogen formation that may further stimulate the recurrence of breast cancer.

This category of drugs has many side effects for the women taking it. One of the most common side effects is musculoskeletal symptoms including joint pain.
